A stretch of the M11 has been closed for hours after two crashes near Harlow, Essex.

The first crash between a motorbike and a car happened on the motorway near Stansted Airport at 4.46am this morning, which led to severe delays and queuing traffic in both directions.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area where possible, and diversion routes were put in place.

The southbound carriageway remains closed between junctions J8 and J9 near Harlow following a second crash at about 8.05am.

Northbound traffic was stopped between junction J9 and J8 for an air ambulance to land following the crash. Traffic heading northbound towards Stansted has since been released after the air ambulance departed.

‘The road has been closed at junction 8 to allow emergency services to carry out their work, and is expected to remain closed for some time.

‘Drivers should check before travelling and plan their journeys accordingly,’ the force said.

National Highways said: ‘Essex police are in attendance and will be carrying out collision investigation works this morning.
