A Ferrari F40 worth around £1 million was wrecked after it smashed into a lamppost on a test drive.

The rare supercar was reportedly being driven by a technician when they lost control of the vehicle on the A5 near Markyate, just north of London yesterday.

The car is said to have hit a lamppost, and overturning at 12.50pm.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is currently not known.

Photos, posted on social media, show the Ferrari on its side, with extensive damage visible. The lamp post can be seen lying on the ground beside it.

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson said:’Police were called at 12.50pm yesterday (Thursday January 16), following reports of a road traffic collision on London Road, Markyate.

‘It is reported that a red Ferrari had collided with a lamp post.

‘The driver has been taken to hospital for treatment, and the vehicle has been recovered.’

Ferrari built 1,311 F40s from 1987-1992, sending 213 of them to the US, according to Auto Evolution.

The company only planned to produce 400 but received so many orders they increased the numbers.

There are apparently only 75 left in the UK, including the one that crashed yesterday.

And, Auto Evolution writes, that particular vehicle has the highest mileage of any F40 in the world. It’s also known for its numberplate F40 PRX.

Although badly damaged, car enthusiasts say it’s unlikely such a rare Ferrari will be written off.

Instead, the vehicle will probably be restored to its former glory.

Ferrari F40s are worth around £1.8million on average, with the most expensive sold in the US in 2002 for $3,965,000 (around £3.2 million).
