London boroughs dominate vehicle crime rankings: ONS data

New research using ONS data has identified the areas in England and Wales with the highest vehicle crime rates per vehicle mile in 2023-24, with London boroughs topping the list.

Analysis by temporary car insurance provider temporary car insurance found that Haringey had the highest vehicle crime rate, with 12.60 offences per million vehicle miles and a total of 4,008 recorded vehicle offences over the year.

Camden followed with a rate of 11.25 offences per million vehicle miles and 3,079 recorded incidents, while Islington ranked third with 9.98 offences per million vehicle miles and 2,251 vehicle crimes.

The data highlights that 23 of the worst-affected local authorities are in London, where factors such as high urban density, heavy traffic, and larger populations may contribute to higher crime rates. In contrast, rural areas in Wales report significantly lower vehicle crime, potentially due to lower population density and reduced anonymity for offenders.

Claire Wills-Mckissick, a customer experience manager at temporary car insurance, said both drivers and local authorities have a role in reducing vehicle crime. She advised motorists to take precautions such as parking in secure locations and using anti-theft devices, while also highlighting the role of temporary car insurance in providing short-term cover if a vehicle is stolen.

She added that local authorities can help tackle the issue by increasing police presence, improving CCTV surveillance, and raising public awareness.
